Climate port Gelsenkirchen: VoltH2 produces green hydrogen

Green hydrogen made in Gelsenkirchen: Dutch company VoltH2 is building a new electrolysis plant in the city harbor, which is expected to produce around 1,800 tons of green hydrogen annually once completed. This hydrogen can then be purchased by neighboring industrial companies such as Uniper, BP, and thyssenkrupp.

The electrolysis plant is being built on a 25,000-square-meter site in the Gelsenkirchen Climate Port. Here, various companies are jointly implementing projects for the climate-neutral transformation of the economy. The focus is on decarbonizing process heat.

The PEM electrolysis plant has a capacity of 20 megawatts. Producing climate-neutral hydrogen will save around 23,000 tons of CO₂ annually. A hydrogen filling station is also planned for the site. This will support transport companies in switching to hydrogen without having to build their own infrastructure. Companies that are not directly connected to the pipeline system can be supplied via the trailer filling station, which is also planned. VoltH2's project thus makes the climate port a blueprint for the climate-friendly conversion of industrial parks.

VoltH2 is currently developing two further PEM electrolysis plants in Germany: in Wilhelmshaven and in Essen.
