Mönchengladbach honored as NRW Logistics Location of the Year 2017

  • NRW.INVEST and LogistikCluster NRW award prize for best skilled worker concept at ExpoReal

Munich, 4. October 2017 - The city of Mönchengladbach is the 2017 Logistics Location in North Rhine-Westphalia. At the Munich real estate fair Expo Real, Christoph Dammermann, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitization and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, today presented the award to Dr. Ulrich Schückhaus, Managing Director of WFMG - Wirtschaftsförderung Mönchengladbach GmbH. For the eighth time, NRW.INVEST, the state's economic development agency, and LogistikCluster NRW awarded the best logistics location in NRW. This year, the focus of the evaluation, besides general industry indicators, was on the best concepts for dealing with the shortage of skilled workers in logistics.

When presenting the award, State Secretary Christoph Dammermann emphasized: "With its outstanding commitment, Mönchengladbach has promoted the positive image of the entire logistics location NRW. In particular, the good cooperation between local politics and industry has contributed a great deal to the successful new settlements."

The city of Mönchengladbach convinced the expert jury with the most coherent concept for combating the shortage of skilled workers. The focus is on the LOG4MG logistics initiative launched by the city's economic development agency. Under its umbrella, 33 companies from different logistics sectors and the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and its logistics institute GEMIT are committed to the location. The partners work closely with the city, the employment agency and the job center to recruit skilled workers for the region. As a result of numerous settlements by well-known logistics companies in recent years, demand at the Mönchengladbach location has risen enormously.

"In recent years, Mönchengladbach has marketed itself consistently and very successfully as a logistics location. The settlements of adidas, DHL, Primark, Vanderlande, Zalando and many others speak for themselves," explains Petra Wassner, CEO of NRW. INVEST. "The parties involved did a great deal to ensure that personnel requirements were met to the satisfaction of the investors."

Peter Abelmann, Manager of the LogistikCluster NRW comments: "NRW not only scores with its outstanding infrastructure and advantageous location, but also offers the know-how and networks to be successful in the German or European market from here. Mönchengladbach shows what investors all over the world appreciate about NRW as a logistics location."
