The Port of Duisburg will play a central role in the development of the hydrogen infrastructure in NRW and beyond. To this end, the operators of the world's largest inland port have reached groundbreaking agreements with both Bertschi AG from Switzerland and Koole Terminals B.V. from the Netherlands.
Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) and the chemical logistics company Bertschi plan to build a storage facility for tank containers with green energy sources and chemical products in Duisburg. An area of the second construction phase of the Duisburg Gateway Terminal (DGT) is to be used for this purpose, with space for up to 900 containers holding hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and other chemical products. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2025.
In addition, duisport and the storage and logistics company Koole have signed a memorandum of understanding. They intend to develop a tank storage facility for liquid renewable fuels and raw materials such as ammonia – one of the most efficient hydrogen energy carriers. The planned site is a plot at Rheinkai Nord in Duisburg-Hochfeld.
For duisport CEO Markus Bangen, the agreements are crucial steps in order to position the port for the future: "In this way, we are making an important contribution to establishing Duisburg as a central hub for sustainable energy products in North Rhine-Westphalia."
