Düsseldorf-based machinery and plant manufacturer GEA has begun construction of a pharmaceutical technology center for freeze-drying systems in Elsdorf, relocating its previous operations in Hürth. GEA is investing a high eight-figure euro sum in Elsdorf. The company's second "factory of the future" is being built on a 40,000-square-meter plot of land. All of the approximately 250 employees will move to the new site. The complete relocation of production, warehousing, laboratories, and administrative functions is planned for the end of 2025.

The new site is being constructed according to high sustainability standards. A photovoltaic system will supply environmentally friendly electricity, waste heat will be recycled, and green roof areas will promote biodiversity. The new competence and production center will primarily be used to construct freeze-drying systems, which are used worldwide to produce injectable drugs, such as vaccines.

"The construction of the new GEA plant is an important step in our structural transformation. Future-proof and valuable jobs will be located in our town," said Andreas Heller, mayor of Elsdorf.
