Germany's biggest steel producer thyssenkrupp is investing in the future of its sites in NRW. For example, the Essen-based industrial group announced investments at the Bochum site to develop it into a center of excellence for electromobility.

Around 150 million euros are to be invested here, including the construction of a new 364-meter annealing and insulating line for electrical steel strip, the foundation stone for which was recently laid. This will create almost 70 additional jobs for highly skilled workers in Bochum. Around 2,400 people are currently employed there.

The electrical steel strips meet the requirements for high-efficiency motors of the kind used primarily in electric vehicles. The company aims to "meet future customer requirements for thinner, highly silicified and non-grain-oriented electrical steel strip with improved mechanical and magnetic properties," thyssenkrupp announces. In short, the objective is to improve energy efficiency and motor efficiency.

Up to 218,000 tons of these strips are to be produced in Bochum following the planned completion of the plant in 2024. The construction partner is the SMS group, a plant engineering company based in Düsseldorf.
