The digital future of chemistry begins in Krefeld

The Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences gets companies fit for Industry 4.0 with its innovative high-throughput system.

The Institute for Surface Technology (HIT) at the Hochschule Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld marks a milestone for the digitalization of development processes: In the former paint laboratory of the Chemistry Department, a fully automated high-throughput facility that sets new standards has now been completed. It is used for research and development of resource-efficient and bio-based products, for example paints, coatings, adhesives and materials as well as new and innovative construction elements or functional textiles. With up to 100 experiments per day, the facility provides small and medium-sized companies in the regions with the opportunity to use digitalization and Industry 4.0 to develop their innovative projects. Thanks to machine learning, new products can be developed quickly and with high quality while minimizing the consumption of chemicals.

The plant is part of the largest third-party funded project to date, D-NL-HIT (total volume: 10.3 million euros) – a cross-border project with partners from research and transfer in the German-Dutch border region.
