Monheim to deploy autonomous electric buses in regular service starting in autumn

Copyright: monheim.de

From autumn of this year, the people of Monheim will be able to ride back and forth without a driver on the two-kilometer route between the bus station and the old town. This is because the five public transport shuttle buses from the French manufacturer Easymile used here navigate autonomously. They will run as a separate line every ten minutes from 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, in flowing traffic. This makes Monheim a pioneer throughout Europe.

An E-bus, which can accommodate up to eleven people, costs around 250,000 euros. The total investment is around 2.1 million euros, of which the state of North Rhine-Westphalia will cover 90 percent.

If the system proves worthwhile, it will be extended to other parts of the city.
