The Japanese-Italian automotive supplier is building a new plant for electric motors in NRW.

Marelli plans to start production at the new site in Cologne-Niehl as early as the first half of 2021. In a former Ford production hall, the Japanese-Italian automotive supplier will produce the first 800V high-performance engines for electric cars worldwide. The new production line will cover 18,000 square meters, and expansion beyond that is already being considered.

Marelli rates e-mobility as one of the major growth markets, and the company has been active in this field for years. Marelli was one of the first providers of a hybrid solution for Formula 1 and was also one of the pioneers in Formula E. In the meantime, the automotive supplier is also active in the mass market and would now like to continue on this path from its new location: "We chose Cologne as our location in the heart of Europe because here we find highly qualified employees with experience in the automotive industry and the region is developing into a center for e-mobility," reports Joachim Fetzer, CEO of Marelli's Electric Powertrain business unit.

Marelli plans to employ around 160 people at the new Cologne plant and create a further 60 jobs over the coming year.
