Düsseldorf Airport focuses on sustainable fuels

The Spanish Exolum group is constructing a new tank farm for aviation fuels at Düsseldorf Airport. As an international service provider for the transportation and storage of oil products, Exolum is strengthening the airport's supply security. Exolum is also making an important contribution to the sustainable fuel supply of Germany's fourth-largest airport. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with an expected opening in mid-2028.

The modern storage and distribution facility replaces two existing tank farms, increasing the total capacity by 41%, to 9,000 cubic meters. A notable feature is that the facility is designed for use with sulfur-free kerosene and sustainable aviation fuels. Additionally, starting in 2029, most fuel will be delivered via a new rail connection. This will reduce truck transportation and significantly lower CO₂ emissions in the logistics sector. Exolum plans to operate the facility for at least 20 years, with the option to extend for a further five years.

This construction project contributes to the implementation of the European ReFuelEU requirements. These stipulate an increased use of sustainable fuels in aviation. The investment is an important step toward achieving climate neutrality at Düsseldorf Airport by 2035. Lars Redeligx, CEO of Düsseldorf Airport, explains, "We aspire to be one of the top airports in Europe in our category, excelling in quality, efficiency, and sustainability. To achieve this, we need strong partners with vision and expertise, such as Exolum."
