A cooperation agreement with the Korean Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) is to strengthen the existing collaboration.

The first Korean students came to RWTH Aachen University 70 years ago – Today the university is closely networked with South Korea's research landscape and companies, and the state is an important economic partner for North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany. The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Korean Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) and RWTH Aachen University is intended to further strengthen this relationship. The signing took place during the International Conference of Middle Market Enterprise Innovation (MMI) 2020.

An important milestone in the intensification of the cooperation is the foundation of the Korean German Technology Cooperation Center, which will commence operations in January 2021 at the Technology Park Herzogenrath (TPH) of RWTH Aachen University. "The foundation of the Technology Cooperation Center in Herzogenrath confirms the attractiveness of North Rhine-Westphalia as a location for companies from all over the world. It sends out a further signal that North Rhine-Westphalia has many strengths, from research to the workbench, and is an economic region with major locational advantages," said Minister President Armin Laschet during the visit by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea.

The new research and development center is intended to make it easier for South Korean SMEs to access the European market and could also lead to the establishment of further South Korean companies in North Rhine-Westphalia in the long term.
