A new test site at RWTH Aachen University will link 5G research and Industry 4.0.

The new 5G mobile communications standard plays a particularly important role in the further development of the Smart Factory. To enable researchers and companies to test applications for networked production, the 5G-Industry Campus Europe is being launched in Aachen. This is a research network covering an area of around one square kilometer, in which data connections with a bandwidth of up to ten gigabits can be established.

The new 5G campus on the premises of RWTH Aachen University is the largest of its kind in Europe. It offers the ideal infrastructure for developing, testing and optimizing 5G innovations - from production to logistics. The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT, the Machine Tool Laboratory WZL and the Research Institute for Rationalization (FIR) are connected via the network, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport. Further institutes at RWTH Aachen University are to be added at a later date.
