UPS to build package center in Bielefeld

The American logistics company is investing 80 million US dollars in its new location in East Westphalia.

The new package center, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2017, will have an operating area of around 15,000 square meters and be equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

"This groundbreaking affirms UPS's commitment to companies of all sizes in the region and our trust in the German economy," explained Frank Sportolari, President, UPS Germany. "This investment secures strategic future development opportunities for UPS and our customers in East Westphalia."

The new package center replaces the UPS branch in Herford, where the lease is expiring. All 330 staff working in Herford will be employed in the Bielefeld package center. The new system has a sorting capacity of more than 22,500 packages per hour with three automated main sorting systems and one automated small parcel sorting systems. In addition to 65 automatic loading and unloading bays for containers, Bielefeld will also provide parking positions for 115 delivery vehicles.

Bielefeld's Mayor Pit Clausen welcomes the decision by UPS. "This is an important investment in Bielefeld as a key location for business and logistics. We are happy that existing employment in the region will be preserved and that there is the prospect for creating new jobs," says Clausen.

"North Rhine-Westphalia is the number one logistics region in Germany. The fact that a company like UPS is investing millions in Bielefeld shows the attractiveness of our state for the logistics industry," adds Michael Groschek, Transport Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. "It also demonstrates that this industry sector is an important growth engine for our state."
