Unitech opens research and development center in the TPH

Herzogenrath. The Korean company Unitech Co. Ltd, a supplier to the automotive and shipbuilding industry, opened its branch in the Technology Park Herzogenrath TPH on 22 June. In the technology center, where in the next few months a research and development center is to be set up, the company has moved into an area of 200 square meters. Five people will be employed here in the medium term.

"We are very pleased to have found a suitable location in the vicinity of the outstanding teaching and research facilities of the Aachen universities," said Seoung-Ho Lee, Chairman of Unitech at the opening.

Founded in 1999, the company manufactures and develops adhesive materials which are used particularly in the interior trim of cars. Its customers include renowned companies such as Volkswagen, GM, Hyundai and KIA. In Korea, more than a hundred people are employed in a total of three branches. The company has had a production facility for adhesives and sealants in Slovakia since 2006.

Since classic welds are increasingly being replaced by bonding, particularly in automotive production, new markets and fields of activity are opening up here. The goal of the branch office in Herzogenrath will be to promote research and development in this area.

"At an investment seminar in Korea in May 2014, which we organized jointly with Kitech, the Korean government organization for applied research and development services, initial talks took place with a Unitech company representative," said Frank Leisten, responsible for settlements at the regional economic development agency AGIT. "In the autumn we then made contact with various companies and higher education institutions in Aachen in order to look into possible collaboration with Unitech," Leisten adds.

"The decision of the Unitech company is impressive proof of the attractiveness and quality of the Aachen region in particular for research and science. The Technology Park Herzogenrath is the right environment in which to develop new products," explains Petra Wassner, CEO of NRW.INVEST. "We are delighted that we were able to win this successful company for the location."

Unitech was particularly impressed by the good interaction between the actors who assisted the company in its settlement. "AGIT, NRW.INVEST, the economic development agency of the Aachen city region and in particular the local players in Herzogenrath supported us and made a smooth settlement possible," said Seoung-Ho Lee in conclusion.
