The Port of Duisburg continues to gain importance as a major logistics hub.

North Rhine-Westphalia is considered to be one of the leading transshipment hubs in Europe – and the new Silk Road also plays a key role here. In addition to Duisburg, with the largest inland port in Europe, Neuss and Cologne are now also directly connected to the logistics route to China.

In the past crisis year in particular, the Silk Road has proved to be a valuable transport route for medical products such as masks and protective clothing. But other goods such as car parts, electronics and coolants are also increasingly being handled via the route between Europe and China.

With 12,000 trains and 200,000 containers, the Silk Road set a new record in 2020. According to Deutsche Bahn, the half-million container unit mark will be reached by the middle of this year.
