In the course of the energy transition, airport operators have also set themselves ambitious goals to reduce CO2 emissions. A team of researchers at the Chair of Thermal Turbomachinery and Aero Engines at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum now wants to support this effort with the EU-funded project INDIGO (Integration and Digital Demonstration of Low-emission Aircraft Technologies and Airport Operations).
Together with other scientists from the global consortium, the head of the chair, Prof. Dr. Francesca di Mare, and her team want to model the airports of the future. NRW is thereby contributing its excellent expertise to another international project. The aim of the project is to develop methods for determining the positive impact of climate-friendly and quiet aircraft on the environment – especially at and near airports. In other words, the scientists from NRW are developing an apparatus that will be used in the future to analyze the extent to which local air quality can be improved and even noise pollution reduced with the help of new aviation technologies.
Prof. Dr. Francesca di Mare: "INDIGO will explore a new paradigm for the next generation of quiet and clean medium-range aircraft. In doing so, we will paint a picture of how such a new aircraft can change operations at and near airports."
