Online supermarket expands after successful start in NRW

The online supermarket Picnic, which was launched in the Neuss district in April, is already growing after only six months and expanding its delivery radius to include Mönchengladbach. More than 100,000 households will benefit from this service.

The online service, which originated in the Netherlands where it already supplies 175,000 customers in 55 towns and cities, is now opening a second central location. Here, consumers can order food and everyday products online. Whether it is fruit, vegetables, drinks, cheese, sausages or drugstore articles – Picnic delivers free of charge and according to daily optimized thanks to sophisticated software routes. This means that customers know in advance exactly when the order will arrive at their front door.

Picnic currently employs around 100 people in North Rhine-Westphalia. This also includes "runners" who deliver the orders in specially developed electric vans. In addition to the existing fleet of 25 vehicles, a further 15 vans are to be purchased for the new location.

"Within just a few weeks of its launch, Picnic has become the largest online food retailer in the Neuss region," says Frederic Knaudt from the founding team of Picnic in Germany.

The products come from Edeka Rhein-Ruhr as well as numerous bakeries, butchers and farms in the region.
