It will be the tenth plant of its kind in the Ruhr Metropolis. With the new, state-of-the-art hot-dip galvanizing plant in Dortmund, thyssenkrupp Steel aims to produce 600,000 tons of hot-dip galvanized steel annually. The material is becoming increasingly important, particularly in the automotive industry: Hot-dip galvanized components have high corrosion protection and are therefore particularly durable.
"In the auto industry, a substantial shift is taking place from electrolytically galvanized to hot-dip galvanized steels," explains Premal Desai, CEO of thyssenkrupp Steel. "With the new hot-dip galvanizing line we are following this trend and utilizing the corresponding market potential. The plant is a key element in our approach to distinguishing ourselves from our competitors with high-tech products." In addition to steels, the new plant will produce innovative zinc-magnesium products which, according to the company, are particularly sustainable due to their small production runs.
Prime Minister Armin Laschet welcomes the development: "As an industrial state, North Rhine-Westphalia wants to be a driver of innovation, for example in the climate-neutral production of steel. We want to show that successful climate protection can go hand in hand with a strong business location and that we can provide convincing and sustainable answers to the challenges of the energy transition and climate change".
