Amazon: Multi-million investment in Dortmund

The US online retailer is expanding its existing network in NRW and building a new logistics center on the premises of the former Westfalenhütte in Dortmund at a cost of 27 million euros.

The building will house state-of-the-art production facilities on an area of 45,000 square meters. With the new building Amazon is reacting to growing customer demand in Germany and with the additional storage capacity it is supporting the independent dealers who sell their products via Amazon Marketplace. "The new location will help Amazon to supply customers in Germany and the rest of Europe quickly and reliably. We are convinced that customers will benefit from this investment, as will the whole region," emphasizes Roy Perticucci, Head of the European Logistics Network at Amazon.

With the commissioning of the Dortmund logistics center, which is planned for the end of 2017, the US corporation is creating at least 1,000 new jobs.

To date, the US dealer has nine logistics centers in Germany, two of which are located in Werne and Rheinberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The fact that Amazon has once again opted for a plot in NRW with its current investment confirms the role of the state as one of the leading logistics hubs. "The new Amazon building stabilizes Dortmund's role as a major logistics location in Germany and Europe," says Dortmund's Mayor Ullrich Sierau.
