Together with the Dutch company Chane, the Port of Duisburg is planning the construction of a large tank storage facility for ammonia. The project could begin this year and the approval process has already been initiated.
The tank farm will be built on the Rheinkai in Duisburg-Hochfeld. Large quantities of ammonia will be transferred from barges to trucks or trains from there. Ammonia is an important raw material for various industries, such as the fertilizer industry. On the other hand, the gas plays an important role in developing a safe and reliable hydrogen infrastructure. This is because ammonia can be used to transport (green) hydrogen over long distances. At its destination, the hydrogen is recovered through ammonia cracking.
There are also plans to perform the cracking process directly in Duisburg. The hydrogen released during this process could then be transported via pipeline to industrial customers. Additionally, there are plans to produce green hydrogen via electrolysis near the tank farm.
The project is intended to strengthen Duisburg as an important part of the German hydrogen infrastructure and decarbonization strategy.
