North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is Germany's most populous federal state and largest market for medical technology, health care and life science products. The state is a hub for technological developments such as digitalisation, innovative diagnostics and treatment methods. Excellent scientific research in NRW often leads to commercial exploitation of forward-looking innovations including a wide range of high-tech areas such as molecular diagnostics, (bio-) pharmaceuticals and biomaterials, as well as medical devices. A large number of international companies establish their own business here.
With the health market as one of the most important growth markets, the state capital of North-Rhine Westphalia, Düsseldorf, represents one of the medical hotspots in Germany and Europe. Companies can find a large number of research and cooperation partners for their business activities here and they can easily and efficiently enter the European market from here. The region around Düsseldorf is characterized by a unique concentration of internationally renowned universities and research institutes. The Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf is particularly strong in research in the field of biosciences. The German Diabetes Center, the Leibniz Institute for Environmental Medicine Research and the Biological-Medical Research Center add to the top level R&D infrastructure. Around 100 life science companies as well as numerous suppliers and service providers are based in the Düsseldorf economic area. With Qiagen and Miltenyi Biotec, the two largest biotech companies in Germany have their headquarters in this region.
